Common questions about typing speed and this app. Click a question to expand the answer.
Practice regularly with focused sessions: aim for accuracy first, then gradually raise pace. Use proper posture, keep your eyes on the text ahead of the cursor, and drill problem keys. Short daily practice beats occasional long cram sessions.
This app reports speed in WPM (words per minute). A “word” is usually five characters (including spaces). WPM is derived from how many correct keystrokes you complete over the time you spend typing, so accuracy and rhythm both matter.
Tests give you a clear baseline, show progress over time, and highlight weak keys or habits. They also help you set realistic goals and stay motivated when practice feels repetitive.
It depends on your work. Many people aim for roughly 40–60 WPM for general use, and higher for roles heavy on writing or data entry. Prioritize accuracy and comfort; speed increases naturally when you stop hunting for keys.
If you are signed in, completed test results and stats are saved to your TypingOcean account (Firestore) and sync across devices. If you are not signed in, results stay in your browser (localStorage) on this device until you sign in, when they are uploaded to your account.
Summary stats on My Performance combine all keystrokes in the selected period (not one vote per test), so longer sessions affect the average more.
Timed tests end when the timer runs out. Unlimited tests have no timer — type as long as you want and press Esc (or Finish test) when done; WPM is based on your elapsed time. Page tests finish when you complete the passage for the number of pages you chose.
Yes. Open Test settings from the header on any typing test page and turn off Allow backspace for a stricter run where mistakes cannot be undone. The setting is saved in your browser and locks once you start typing. Daily Challenge always allows backspace so scores stay comparable.
