I wait at the bus stop each day at eight with my pals. The bus is big and red and full of kids from our block. We sit in rows and look out the glass at homes and shops. The bus goes slow on the wet road and turns at each corner. We pass shops and parks and tall homes on the long route. At last we get to school and hop off with our bags and coats. I wave to the man who drives the bus and he waves back. He drives on his way to pick up more kids down the road. We walk to class and talk about games and plans for lunch. We felt glad to be out in the fresh air with friends near. The day went fast and left us tired but full of good cheer. Mom smiled and said we did well and should rest a bit now. We made plans to do it all again when the sun comes back. Birds sang in the trees and the world felt calm and bright. Mom made a cake for my big day with pink icing and sprinkles. It was soft and sweet and smelled good in the warm kitchen. We lit ten wax sticks and sang a song with all our guests. I made a wish and blew them all out in one long breath. We cut the cake and had a big slice with cold fresh milk. My pals got cake too and we all ate fast and laughed a lot. It was the best day of the year and I felt glad and proud. Dad took photos and mom hugged me when the party was done. We cleaned the table and put the gifts in a neat pile. At night I read the cards and smiled at each kind note. We made plans to do it all again when the sun comes back. We play a game with a red ball in the yard after school. One of us kicks and the rest try to catch it with fast hands. We run fast and laugh when the ball rolls far past the fence. Sam kicks it high and it goes over the fence into the lane. We climb up and get it back down with help from a tall kid. Then we play tag and run in big loops round the old oak tree. We are hot and tired but we do not stop till mom calls us. At last we sit in the shade and rest and drink cold water. We made plans to do it all again when the sun comes back. Birds sang in the trees and the world felt calm and bright. We took a boat out on the lake on a calm clear morning. The oars cut the still blue water with a soft steady splash. Fish swam deep and we could not see them in the dark depths. We rowed slow and felt the sun on our skin and faces. A cool wind blew and we put on coats when clouds came near. We ate lunch on the bank and lay in the grass for a nap. Then we rowed back and tied the boat up at the old wood dock. It was a calm and nice day on the lake with mom and dad. We drove home tired and glad and talked about the trip all night. We felt glad to be out in the fresh air with friends near. Birds sang in the trees and the world felt calm and bright. We went to a pond near our home on a calm warm morning. The water was calm and full of fish and small green weeds. We sat on the bank and cast a line and waited with care. A fish bit the bait and we pulled it in with a quick tug. It was small and wet and slid in the net with a flip. We let it go back in the cool pond and watched it swim off. Ducks swam by and we fed them bits of bread from our bag. We went home when the sun got low and the air turned cool. Mom made hot soup and we told her about the fish and ducks. We felt glad to be out in the fresh air with friends near. The day went fast and left us tired but full of good cheer.
