A big tree grows in our back yard and shades the whole lawn. Its leaves are green in the warm months and rustle in the wind. Birds nest in the top and sing each dawn before we wake up. We sit in its shade and read or nap on a soft old quilt. In fall the leaves turn red and gold and drop on the grass. They fall to the ground and we rake them up in tall piles. We jump in the pile and laugh out loud till we are tired. The tree stands tall all year long and roots run deep in soil. Squirrels run up the trunk and hide nuts in cracks in the bark. We felt glad to be out in the fresh air with friends near. The day went fast and left us tired but full of good cheer. Mom smiled and said we did well and should rest a bit now. We made plans to do it all again when the sun comes back.
